Spatial Representation and Reasoning

چکیده
A robot moving through an environment, an interface to a geographical database, and a natural language program for giving directions all need means for representing and reasoning about spatial properties and relations. These include shape, size, distance, orientation, and relative location. The most precise and highly developed system of spatial representation is the mathematics of Euclidean space. But very often this is too precise for the purposes at hand. We may not have exact information and we may not need precise answers. For example, if we are telling someone how to get to the post office, we don’t need to be more precise than the streets to follow. For this reason, much work in artificial intelligence has focused on qualitative spatial representation and reasoning. Indeed, studies of human problem solving and language understanding [Talmy 1983, Herskovits 1986, Langacker, 1987, Lakoff, 1987, Tversky 1993, Landau & Jackendoff 1993] indicate that we draw fairly subtle and impor-

Introduction: Clinical reasoning is a vital aspect of physiciancompetence. It has been the subject of academic research fordecades, and various models of clinical reasoning have beenproposed. The aim of the present study was to develop a theoreticalmodel of clinical reasoning. Methods: To conduct our study, we applied the process of theorysynthesis in accordan...
متن کاملIncluding Qualitative Spatial Knowledge in the Sense-Plan-Act Loop
In this paper we present ongoing work on integrating qualitative and metric spatial reasoning into planning for robots. We propose a knowledge representation and reasoning technique, grounded on well-established constraint-based spatial calculi, for combining qualitative and metric knowledge and obtaining plans expressed in actionable metric terms.

Declarative spatial reasoning denotes the ability to (declaratively) specify and solve real-world problems related to geometric and qualitative spatial representation and reasoning within standard knowledge representation and reasoning (KR) based methods (e.g., logic programming and derivatives). One approach for encoding the semantics of spatial relations within a declarative programming frame...
متن کاملSpatial Reasoning as Verbal Reasoning
We introduce an approach for how spatial reasoning can be conceived as verbal reasoning. We describe a theory of how humans construct a mental representation given onedimensional spatial relations. In this construction process objects are inserted in a dynamic structure called a “queue” which provides an implicit direction. The spatial interpretation of this direction can be chosen freely. This...

Objective Stuttering is one of the most common speech disorders that generate many complications in children and adults. This disorder involves behavioral, cognitive and emotional interactions. So, the purpose of the current study is to investigate the cognitive functions of students with stuttering. Materials & Methods A descriptive study, comprising of 30 students (8 females and 22 males) fr...
متن کاملA Model for Integrated Qualitative Spatial and Dynamic Reasoning about Physical Systems
Qualitative spatial reasoning has many applications in such diverse areas as natural language understanding, cognitive mapping, and reasoning about the physical world. We address problems whose solutions require integrated spatial and dynamic reasoning. In this paper, we present our spatial representation, based on the extremal points of objects, and show that this representation is useful for ...
